Task followers
Followers are people who receive task comments, completion notices, reminders, and digest updates without being the assignee. Following a task is a way to stay informed without being directly responsible for the work.
How to follow a task
- Open the task by clicking it.
- In the task detail page, find the Followers field.
- Click to add yourself or another team member as a follower.
You can also follow a task from the task's Actions menu by selecting Follow.
What followers receive
Followers get notified when:
- The task is marked complete.
- A comment is added to the task.
- A start date, due date, or overdue reminder is sent.
- The task appears in a task digest email.
Notifications go through the same channels as other workspace notifications: in-app, email, and mobile push, depending on your notification preferences.
Followers vs assignees
Assignees are responsible for completing the task. Followers stay informed without being directly responsible for the work. A task can have multiple followers and multiple assignees at the same time.
Followed tasks can appear in personal task areas, including the Following view and other views that include tasks connected to you.
Automatic following rules
Each person controls their own automatic following rule from Settings > Tasks. The available options are:
- I will manually add myself as a follower.
- Automatically follow tasks created by me.
- Automatically follow tasks created by me and others. This option is only available to owners and co-owners.
These settings only affect the person changing the setting. They do not let an owner choose a specific project manager or team member to follow every new task.
Automations and followers
Automations can create tasks and can update task fields such as assignee, status, start date, due date, and colour. They do not currently have a field for adding a specific follower to every new task.
If a project manager needs updates for every new task, the closest built-in option is for that project manager to set their own task following rule to Automatically follow tasks created by me and others, if their role allows it. Otherwise, add them manually as a follower on the relevant tasks.
The Following view
The main Tasks page has a built-in Following filter view in the left panel. This view shows every task you're following across your workspace, making it easy to check on work you're tracking without searching for each task individually.
Unfollowing a task
To stop receiving updates, open the task and remove yourself from the Followers field, or select Unfollow from the task actions menu.
Comments and mentions
When someone comments on a task, Plutio adds that person as a follower so they stay connected to the discussion.
When someone is mentioned in a task comment, Plutio can also add the mentioned person as a follower. This helps keep people included after they are brought into a task conversation.
Private notes do not add followers.
